The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team defeated San Antonio Veterans Memorial 4-1 Jan. 17 after going 2-2 at the Bastrop Tournament Jan. 12-14 to finish third overall.
Against Veterans Memorial, the Mustangs (8-2) took a 2-1 lead in the first half and added two more goals in the second half to cruise to the win.
At the Bastrop Tournament Jan. 14, Marble Falls defeated Manor New Tech in penalty kicks for third place after coaches chose to forego playing a regular game.
“It was a long three days,” head coach Rick Hoover said. “Everybody was beat up and tired. We chose five shooters and made four goals. They made two.”
The Mustangs who scored were Garrett Goggans, Cash Bussaraporn, Esteban Dominguez and Diego Mata.
This was the second time the Mustangs faced New Tech. They played them Jan. 12 and won 2-1. That same day Marble Falls defeated Austin Harmony School 6-0
The losses were to Bastrop 3-2 Jan. 14 and to Temple 3-1.
The goals against Bastrop were scored by Seth Parker, who was assisted by Dominguez. Dominguez scored the other unassisted goal.
The lone goal against Temple was scored by Marco Almazan and was assisted by Charlie Brantley.
“I thought we had a really good tournament,” Hoover said. “During the losses, we had a lot of players missing from the tournament.”
They had other commitments to other activities that were both family and school related, he added.
To help offset the roster shortage, three junior varsity players suited up and played.
“That 3-1 loss to Bastrop is a little misleading,” Hoover said. “The score was 2-1, and they scored a late goal. We had our chances. If we had been at full strength, it would have been different.”
Marble Falls welcomes Liberty Hill at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, to Mustang Stadium.
